A Dream of Bliss and Ruin

Scene 1

INTERIOR. NIGHT. FLORA COMPOUND, DAHLIA’S BEDROOM

DAHLIA WALTERS is a teenager who has grown bored with the repetivity of life and, to cope, starts to have very vivid dreams in which she is the queen of a desert terrain. She enjoys reading and often daydreams.

DAHLIA is preparing to go to bed by brushing her teeth and then climbing into bed.

DAHLIA WALTERS

(Voice over)

My life is not exciting

(Pause)

Until I go to sleep-that is

Scene 2

EXTERIOR. DAWN. TELAL DESERT

DAHLIA is exploring the desert and discovers a rock in the sand, she admires it before putting it down and walking away.

DAHLIA WALTERS

(Voice over)

Of course the whole waking up thing ruins it

Scene 3

INTERIOR. DAY. DAHLIA’S HOUSE.

SALLY is DAHLIA’s mother who enjoys control and values cleanliness and often views the world in a pessimistic way.

SALLY WALTERS

(Yelling but muffled through the door)

DAHLIA WALTERS

(Opening eyes)

Hmm

SALLY WALTERS

Dahlia

DAHLIA WALTERS

SALLY WALTERS

Its almost 12, get up

DAHLIA WALTERS

Its summer

(Frustrated groan, slides out of bed and walks away)

Scene 4-7

DAHLIA WALTERS

(Voice over)

Life without dreams cannot be truly defined as life. Not in my case anyway.

You see, dreams are more than an involuntary set of images playing in my head at night like a show, they're a possibility for a new life, in a new world. And because we as humans experience them so frequently and yet are unable to fully understand them, we choose to dismiss them and view dreamers as merely delusional. But we are not. We are the embodiment of hope. Of liberty. And if I could share my dreams with everyone so that you too can understand what dreams truly provide, I would. In the end, I believe that the only way to escape a predetermined destiny is by creating a world in which we can decide for ourselves, outside the boundaries of society, escaping the repetitive cycle commonly confused with life. A world in which golden sand stretches for as far as your eyes can see and the skies are as vibrant as a Monet painting. A perfect world, even if it does only last for 7 short hours. And besides, why should we settle for this flawed life, because when I'm not dreaming, all I can see in the world around me is anger and pain and hunger for more, but that world? This world? Well- lets just say it’s everything I could ever dream of.

Scene 8

EXTERIOR. DAY. RAHA GARDENS PLAZA.

DAHLIA is sitting on a swing waiting for JEANENE

JEANENE ADAMS is DAHLIA’s best friend who is much more grounded and realistic and prefers to live in the moment.

  JEANENE ADAMS

(From off screen)

Dahlia!

JEANENE ADAMS

Dahlia hey!

DAHLIA WALTERS

Oh Jeanene you surprised me

JEANENE ADAMS

Ahah, sorry I’m late, what were you doing?

DAHLIA WALTERS

Just daydreaming

JEANENE ADAMS

Not surprised, let's get going?

DAHLIA WALTERS

Sure

DAHLIA gets up from the swing, dusting it off before her and JEANENE both walk off frame.
