The Encounter

Week 4

Image
This week, on Thursday, I was able to shoot my scenes with my sister (as Caitlin) and her friend (as Bella). Prior to this, on Wednesday, we ran through the script and addressed a few costume and makeup detail.  To prepare for editing afterwards, I also watched a few tutorials about Adobe Premiere Pro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkXh1jECW1U&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8B8hZdHF1o&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGwRMix06BA&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0SIY36MDDI&feature=youtu.be

The Encounter-Planning

Image
To plan for the encounter, I made a table detailing the shot, along with a picture, the action and the sounds (music and dialogue) occurring within the shot. I also looked into the mise-en-scene of the scene and the 180-degree-rule.

Week 3

This week I completed all the planning (using a shot list to identify the shots and framing and then determining the music and mise-en-scene) as well as scripting for the encounter which I plan to film and start editing next week. Finally, I started to look at what music I should use during the scene and what sounds I should use (evidence of which will be posted in the 'The Encounter-planning' post). During our theory lessons, we looked at different types of editing and mise-en-scene and how it was used in order to analyse a scene and its impact.

Week 2

This week we continued on some theory concerning camera angles, movement and music (including how to identify major and minor keys). During the practical lessons, we were introduced to the preliminary, 'the encounter' task for both print and moving image, I then decided to do the film task as I have had some practice due to the summer task and wanted to improve on my previous attempt. After some group discussion further allowing me to understand the task, I began to look at screenplay writing for the script of the scene and I also looked at my theory work to decide on which shots and angles I should use to best portray the relationship between the characters and the location I will shoot in whilst following the 180-degree-rule.  To make a start, I made a quick mind map to lay out my initial ideas on the project and then, to further build on my ideas, I sketched out a simple story board.

Head start - print task

Before my a-levels officially started this year, I was given a set of tasks to introduce both the course and the subject. One of them was to create a magazine cover and contents page for a chosen topic, as I have never done any magazine work before, I had wanted to experiment whilst doing the task. I had decided to do mine as a travel magazine of the Philippines as I have a plethora a photos and wouldn't need to go out and get more.

Summer work

During the summer, I completed 2 tasks. Task 1 involves analysing an article that talks about hegemony and then looking at hegemony presented within a film: In the second task, I also was required to analyse an article, this one being about the 180-degree-rule, before composing 2 short videos that followed the same scene, 1 where I followed the rule and the other where I broke it before analysing the impact of doing so:

Week 1

August 30th to September 3rd As an introduction into AS level media studies, especially as a new student to both the school and the subject, we looked at the syllabus and a general overview of what would be covered in the next 2 years.  In my theory lesson, my class began to look at the different camera codes and their impact on the audience which allowed me to quickly understand simple and key concepts of media studies and film. In my practical lessons, I started to create my blog. I started off by looking at the examples of both the sites weebly and blogger provided by my teacher before overall deciding that I generally preferred the layout of blogger. After having watched a short student-created tutorial on how to make a start to creating my blog, I then moved onto experimenting with the site by adding some gadgets, writing in the ‘about me’ section and looking at the different themes and layouts I could create. Examples of such layouts where I made slight adjustments (su...
